Most toiletries are made from petrochemicals and are highly toxic including baby products. The main culprit is sodium laurel sulphate which is used to make things laver. It is in toothpaste, shampoos, shower gels, baby shampoos etc.

Toxic ingredients to avoid in natural cosmetics
- Triethanolamine - A cleansing base. Is an amine: forms carcinogens if mixed with nitrosating agents. Used as pesticide inert; potentially harmful to the immune system.
- Methyl/Propyl/Butyl/Ethyl Parabens - Common preservatives. Endocrine disruptor. Shown in a small research study to be linked to cancer. Have caused many allergic reactions and skin rashes.
- Imidazolidinyl Urea and Diazolidinyl Urea - These are the most commonly used preservatives after parabens. Well established as a primary cause of contact dermatitis (American Academy of Dermatology).
- Petrolatum - A manufacturing by-product, used to "moisturise". Also in the form of kerosene, benzene, gasoline, paraffin. May contain harmful impurities.
- Propylene Glycol - a known neuro-toxin, the main ingredient in anti-freeze.
- PVP/PVA co-polymer - Plastic. A petroleium derived chemical used in hairsprays and other cosmetics. Toxic.
- Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulphate - A foaming agent; main ingredient in engine de-greasers. can cause eye/ scalp and skin irritations and allergic reactions. Combines with other chemicals to create nitrosamines.
- Steralkonium Chloride - Developed by the fabric industry as a fabric softener.
- Synthetic colours - by product of the coal industry. Labelled as FD&C or D&C followed by a colour and a number. Many have been taken off the market over the years as they have been directly linked to cancer.
- Synthetic Fragrances - Another by product of the coal industry. Can cause headaches, dizziness, rashes, hyperpigmentation,violent coughing, vomiting. Listed only as FRAGRANCE on labels.
- Phthalates - currently being petitioned against for use in cosmetics (USA). A plasticiser that has been shown to cuase irreparable reproductive damage in unborn foetuses (especially boys).
